Police say 22 arrested for festive firing

PESHAWAR: The Capital City Police have arrested 22 persons and recovered weapons from them during the drive against festive firing, an official said on Monday.
Capital City Police Officer Mohammad Tahir said a campaign had been launched all over Peshawar against celebratory firing and use of cracker bombs at weddings and other festive occasions. He said the sub-divisional police officers and station house officers had directed to hold meetings with elders of the society, religious scholars and elected representatives to support police in bringing an end to the practice that has claimed several lives. "Apart from displaying banners all over the city and on patrolling cars to create awareness among the people, action has been started against those involved in celebratory firing in weddings and other festive occasions," Mohammad Tahir said. He said 22 people had been held during the drive which would continue.
