Speakers at a panel discussion held at Allama Iqbal Open University here on Friday underlined the importance of radio broadcasting in educational pursuits and reformation of society.
The panel discussion on ‘Youth and Radio’ was arranged by the AIOU’s Institute of Educational Technology (IET) in collaboration with Unesco on World Broadcasting Day. The panelists discussed various aspects of radio broadcasting, its importance and the challenges being faced by the youth broadcasters.
Prominent broadcasters and academicians from the local universities participated in the discussion, underlining the need of maximum use of campus broadcast radio to facilitate the students for a better understanding of their relevant subject.
Unesco Representative in Pakistan Zafar Hayat Malik spoke on the importance of the day, and said it provided an opportunity to develop greater cooperation among the broadcasters to give a better voice to the people for change in the society.
Vice Chancellor Professor Shahid Siddiqui while presiding over the panel discussion said that the radio has been most fascinating role in providing information and entertainment to the people. Media, he said, has surpassed all social and education institutions, because it has inherited advantages like its easy and wide accessibility to the people.
The AIOU, he said, has been using multi-media in a big way as a medium of instruction to improve literacy rate in the country. Fighting illiteracy was a big challenge for the AIOU to overcome it through non-formal system.
