NOWSHERA: Two persons were killed and four others sustained injuries when the soldiers fired at a van after the driver sped away mistaking the soldiers for robbers, sources said on Sunday.
The sources said that the security forces had sealed the Cherat-Azakhel, Cherat-Jalozai and Cherat-Manki roads during a pre-dawn operation launched in the district against the militants, kidnappers and extortionists.
The sources said that four workers and a guard of the Cherat Cement Factory were travelling to their duty station in a van when the soldiers at a checkpoint signalled them to stop. The soldiers opened fire on the van when the driver sped away the vehicle. The driver and the guard of the Cherat Cement Factory were killed on the spot while four factory workers sustained injuries.
The injured workers were shifted to a hospital in Peshawar where two of them were stated to be in critical condition. The dead and injured were identified as Malik Shah, Saeedullah, Fahim, Zarid, Nazar Muhammad and Muhabatullah.
Nazar Muhammad told the police that the driver mistook the soldiers for robbers and tried to speed away. Scores of highway robberies had taken place in the area in the past in which robbers, clad in security forces uniform, looted the people.
