ISLAMABAD: Tarbela 4th Extension Power Project has reached 87 percent completion and its unit-17 will start generating power in February 2018.

Project director Sohail Khan told APP on Friday that unit-16 would start supplying 470MW in April followed by unit-15 by May 30. He said dry test of the project was likely to be conducted in December while wet test in January next year.

He said on completion, the 4th project would add 1,410MW cheap hydropower to the national grid. He said work on spiral case and pet liner of unit-17 had already been completed. Two transformers had been installed in the power house while the third transformer was being installed.

Khan said transmission line works were also in progress, and would disperse electricity from Tarbela Hydel Power Station to the national grid. Three units of 470MW each would be installed at the powerhouse which would enhance the total electricity generation to 4,888MW from the existing 3,478MW, he said.
