Admission fees at the University of Balochistan (UOB) have risen at an alarming rate. Balochistan is one of the most backward provinces of the country and a majority of people in the area are living below the poverty line. These people cannot afford to pay the exorbitant fee set by state-owned education institutions. Expensive education has forced parents to sell their belongings so they can pay for their children’s education.
Students have repeatedly protested against the increase in fees. But their efforts have been to no avail. The authorities are completely silent in this regard. Access to education is a basic right. The Balochistan government needs to look into the matter with immediate effect before the situation escalates.
