An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Friday awarded 17 years' imprisonment each to two extortionists.
ATC judge Akhlaq Hussain Laarrak in its verdict observed that Muhammad Wasif and Shahbaz Mughal were found guilty of extortion and possession of illegal arms.
Besides, 17 years' imprisonment both would have to pay Rs 35,000 as a fine amount and in case of default they would have to face another term of six months’ imprisonment each.
Both the convicts were arrested on March 8, 2014 after they had demanded one million rupees from Abbas Saani, a retired officer of PTCL.
The police had recovered Rs 10,000 from the possession of the two convicts at the time of arrest.
However, the counsel for the two had claimed that there was a dispute between Abbas Saani’s son and his clients, who were his business partners, and they were implicated in a false case.
The court relied on the prosecution and awarded sentences after it proved the charges against the two accused. The cases against the accused were lodged at the Gulshan-e-Maymar police station.
Remanded till Feb 12
Meanwhile, another ATC, headed by Bashir Ahmed Khoso, has remanded eight accused of ransacking and creating law and order situation to the police on physical remand till February 12.
Muhammad Tufail, Shamsul Alam, Badiul Alam, Muhammad Ovais, Saifuddin, Yousuf, Mohsin and Taimoor were arrested by the Rangers' personnel on January 29 from Korangi area.
According to the FIR No 37/2015 under Sections 147, 148, 149 and 335 of Pakistan Penal Code, the accused, along with Muhammad Danial and around 11 others, had tried to burn a truck creating a law and order situation in the area.
The detainees are said to be the activists of a political party.
