Students to get free schoolbags, books: minister

LAHORE

Punjab Minister for School Education Rana Mashhood has said the government has decided to distribute free school bags and textbooks among the students to motivate them to get education. 

Charing a meeting at the committee room of school education department on Tuesday, the minister said provision of quality education along with necessary educational facilities in public sector schools was top priority of the government.

The meeting reviewed development on different steps taken for the betterment of school education. The minister told the meeting that in the first phase of this programme, students of Prep, One, Two and Three classes would be given school bags and this programme will be started from Lahore, Toba Tek Singh, Rahim Yar Khan and Rajanpur. He said a three-member committee comprising Special Secretary Schools, Programme Director of Programme Monitoring and Implementation Unit Managing Director Curriculum and Textbook Board has been constituted to finalise this programme.

Punjab Secretary Schools Education Dr Allah Bakhsh Malik, MD PCTB Amir Ejaz and representatives of line departments attended the meeting. 

PU professor gets award: Punjab University Dean Faculty of Life Sciences Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem has been awarded the International Professional Travel Award-2017 by the American Fisheries Society, USA. 

Dr Khan, Professor of Zoology and former Registrar of the Punjab University, was invited as an international guest speaker to attend the 42nd Annual Conference of the American Fisheries Society held in University of Montana, Missoula, Montana, USA, from May 22-26, 2017, where he presented his award winning scholarly research paper entitled “Sustainable Agro-Based Earthen Pond Integrated Carp Fish Farming in Pakistan: Transfer of American Fish Feed Technologies”.

Prof Naeem Khan has consecutively been awarded the AFS International Travel Grant Awards for years 2014, 2016 and 2017 respectively. In the last leg of his academic engagement in North America, he visited University of British Columbia (UBC) Fisheries Center to study and develop research collaboration and academic linkages between UBC and Punjab University. This is 7th international award won by Dr Naeem Khan in a row during the last three years. Previously, he won 4 months EU Erasmus Mundus Academic Staff Visiting Professor Fellowship for the University of Crete, Greece (2016); 6-months EU Erasmus Mundus Post-Doctoral Fellowship for the University of Zagreb, Croatia (2015-16); FAO Global Fisheries Travel Award for Rome, Italy (2015), Norwegian Fisheries Award for Trondheim, Norway (2014); American Fisheries Society Travel Award for Mazatlán, Mexico (2014) and the World Aquaculture Society Travel Award for Adelaide, Australia (2014).

honoured: The names of three faculty members of the University of Health Sciences (UHS) have been included in the list of Young Productive Scientists of Pakistan issued recently by Pakistan Council for Science and Technology (PCST).

According to a press release issued here on Tuesday, UHS Immunology Department’s Assistant Professor Dr Shah Jahan, Physiology and Cell Biology Department’s Assistant Professor Dr Saba Khaliq and Allied Health Sciences Department’s Assistant Professor Dr Asim Pervaiz have been included in the list of total 369 Young Productive Scientists of the country under the age of 40 in the category of Biological Sciences for the year 2016-17 by the PCST.

The award is based on research-related parameters, including authorship of books, PhD research supervision, cumulative impact factor and citations for paper published in impact factor journals, patents granted, awards won and competitive grants secured.
