Boy shot dead, seven people injured in firing

LAHORE

A 14-year-old boy was shot dead and seven other people injured in a firing between two groups over eve-teasing in the Shafiqabad police area on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Waqar, son of Walayat. A  fight between Punjabi and Afghan groups took place over the issue of eve-teasing. The deceased boy's family accused the members of Afghani Group of killing him. The injured, including Naeem, Nadim and Ali, were admitted to hospital where the condition of three of them was stated to be critical. 

The family members and relatives of the deceased staged a massive protest demonstration against the culprits and the police. They  blocked Bund Road which caused a massive traffic jam. 

 Police officers held talks with the protestors and requested them to open road for traffic. They also assured the protestors that police would take action against the persons involved in the incident. The protesters dispersed from after the police assurance.

PO arrested: FIA Corporate Banking Crime Tuesday claimed to have arrested a proclaimed offender (PO) in the Johar Town area.

According to an FIA official, the PO was identified as Basit Kareem. He had been on the run since 2014. He was wanted by FIA in a bank fraud case. 

Seminar: Punjab University’s Centre for Undergraduate Studies organised a seminar “Religious Tolerance in Iqbal’s Philosophy” here on Tuesday to promote the spirit of tolerance on the university campus. 

PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Zaffar Mueen Nasir,  Centre for Undergraduate Studies Director Prof Dr Faheem Aftab, Prof Dr Shahida Hasnain, Prof Dr Jamil Anwar Choudhary, Prof Emeritus Dr SRA Shamsi, Prof Dr Zahid Munir Amir, faculty members and a large number of students were present on the occasion.  Prof Dr Zaffar Mueen Nasir stressed the students to play their role in promotion of tolerance in the university. He lauded the efforts of the centre’s administration for arranging the seminar.  Dr Zahid Munir explained Allama Iqbal’s concept of life being a continuous struggle for betterment. He advised the students to try to make each new day better than the previous one, with some advancement and personal development. 

Training: Lahore Transport Company (LTC) has started creating awareness for public service vehicle operators and their staff about the proper observance of public transport rules and regulations.

According to a press release, the LTC on Tuesday organised training sessions at Niazi Shaheed Chowk and Railway Station for bus and van drivers and fare collectors of the public service vehicles of various routes of the city. 

The LTC officials particularly would focus driving safety measures about appropriately running and halting of vehicles at proper stops, courteous conduct with passengers specifically with senior citizens and female passengers and observance of traffic signals. 

student societies: As follow-up of the recommendations of recent Vice-Chancellors (VCs) and Director Student Affairs Conference, Punjab Higher Education Commission’s working group on Promotion of Peace and Tolerance at University Campuses of Punjab has launched a pilot programme for strengthening student societies at two campuses of University of Education in Lahore and Multan. 

According to a press release, a formal launching ceremony was held on Tuesday at University of Education in Lahore which was presided over by Vice Chancellor Dr Rauf-i-Azam who is also convener of the PHEC working group. Noted drama writer and literary figure Asghar Nadeem Syed and others also spoke on the occasion. The speakers appreciated the initiative to engage the university youth in positive activities. They said there was a dire need to promote culture of dialogue and strengthen student societies on university campuses.
