Govt urged to present public-friendly budget

Punjab University Department of Economics on Thursday organised a pre-budget seminar in which the speakers said 2017-18 budget must be public-friendly budget. 

Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) Chairman Prof Dr Nizamuddin, economist Dr Ashfaq Hussain, Chairman Department of Economics University of Lahore Prof Dr Muhammad Aslam Ch, Vice President Pakistan Kissan Board Sarfaraz Ahmed, In charge PU Department of Economics Ms Kulsoom Zulfiqar, faculty members and a large number of students were present. 

Dr Nizam said entrepreneurial opportunities might help reduce poverty from the country. He advised the students to focus on finding earning resources through entrepreneurship means.

Dr Ashfaq said economic growth was a critical element in the development process. He said economic growth created jobs, raised income of people, generated more tax resources, more development spending and more growth. He said it had been realised that though economic growth was necessary for poverty reduction, it had nevertheless widened the gap between the rich and the poor in many countries. He said fruits of growth had not been shared by all the segments of the society. Prof Dr Aslam Ch said CPEC was a golden opportunity which would bring economic stability in Pakistan. He said 2017-18 budget must be public-friendly budget. He said the government should avoid increasing tax on the goods already in the tax net which would help reduce poverty from the country.

Sarfaraz Ahmed said small farmers belonged to the poorest strata of the country that were deprived of basic education and health facilities. He said agriculture was exempted from tax worldwide except Pakistan. He said there was a need to build dams in the country to manage water scarcity issues. He said hundreds of thousands of tons of wheat got wasted because of lack of storage capacity. Ms Kalsoom Zulfiqar said the purpose of pre-budget seminar was to create awareness among students regarding budget. 

market-based education: Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) Chairman Prof Dr Nizamuddin has said that PHEC is making efforts to ensure market-based education and skills to youth.

He said this while addressing Rotary Youth Leadership Award organised by Rotary Club of Lahore Canal at Punjab University (PU) Pervez Hasan Environmental Law Auditorium here on Thursday. 

The ceremony was presided over by President Rotary Club of Lahore Canal Syed Shahbaz Bukhari. District Governor Rotary International Mir Arif Ali, District Governor Elect Faiza Qamar, past district governors, including Sajid Pervaiz Bhatti, Saeed Shamsi, renowned Rotarians, delegates from foreign countries and a large number of talented youths from different segments of society were present on the occasion. 

Dr Nizamuddin said students should focus on finding opportunities to create jobs through entrepreneurship rather than becoming job seekers. He said new ideas of students would be marketed and the culture of entrepreneurship would be promoted in this regard. He said incubation centres must be set up to market ideas of students. He said Pakistan was the 6th largest country of the world and major strata of the population belonged to students so we must equip our students with skills along with degrees. He said we had high hopes from our youths and country’s future depended on them. 

Syed Shahbaz Bukhari said the purpose of Rotary Youth Leadership Award was to appreciate our youths who had shown outstanding performance in various fields. 

Expat: After the intervention of Overseas Pakistanis Commission (OPC) Punjab, a Canada-based expatriate Pakistani has got possession of his house worth Rs10 million in a housing society of Lahore.

Commissioner OPC Afzaal Bhatti while giving details in this regard told that Imtiaz-ud-Din Siraj of Canada lodged a complaint with OPC that he booked a 10-marla house in a housing scheme in 2010 and made all payment amounting to Rs10 million.

meeting: The first meeting of CEOs of newly established District Education Authorities (DEAs) of Punjab has been scheduled at Directorate of Staff Development (DSD) for May 21.

The meeting to be chaired by Secretary Schools Punjab Dr Allah Bakhsh Malik will discuss the enrolment campaign 2017, recruitment of educators, double shifting in over-crowded public schools, up-gradation of schools to next level, establishment of ECE rooms, Public School Support Program (PSSP) and other issues. 

Meanwhile the Punjab government has constituted a committee for nomination of Chairman, Vice Chairman and Technocrat members of the DEAs in Punjab. The members of the committee are Minister School Education, Chairman Punjab HEC, Additional IG (Special Branch), Secretary Schools, Chairman PEF, VC Sargodha University, Dr Zafar Iqbal Qureshi and Dr Nasreen Rehman of LUMS, Divisional Commissioner concerned and Deputy Commissioner concerned.

The committee will conduct interviews of the candidates and recommend three names for Chairman and Vice Chairman of each DEA and will also finalize the prescribed number of technocrat members of each DEA.
