LAHORE
Dysfunctional metal detectors are being used by the civil defense staff at the entrance to makeshift markets of the city while no walk-through gate was installed there.
The district government, after a terrorism wave, had made installation of walk-through gates mandatory at the entry points to the weekly makeshift markets of the city. A single entry-exist point was also effectively implemented to avoid any untoward incident. However, all the measures are gradually ignored by the district administration as its all focus has turned to schools security only. Interestingly, provincial Agriculture Minister Dr Farukh Javeed identified the use of out-of-order metal detectors at the Shadman makeshift market - one of the busiest and model makeshift markets of the city. During a ‘surprise visit’ to the bazaar, he found that the civil defence official deputed at the entrance point of the Shadman bazaar was just eyewash as he was checking the visitors through an out-of-order metal detector.
The minister issued a notice to the town administration and instructed it to take stern actions against the responsible. However, his ‘surprise visit’ and orders would be flouted as it happened in the past. The government writ is established if it starts from top and the case, the DCO is the mainly responsible who should be issued a show cause notice in order to fox responsibility. However, no show cause will ever reach any DCO which exposes the limitations of the ministers and seriousness of the government toward resolving public issues. The price of potato was stable at Rs 20 to 22 per kg sold at Rs 22 per kg. Onion reduced by Re one per kg, fixed at Rs 16 to 18 per kg while mixed sold at Rs 20 per kg.
