‘Govt to take steps to prevent thalassemia’

LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, in his message on World Thalassemia Day, said the government would take every possible step for the protection of children against thalassemia.He said, “Today we have to pledge that the efforts to make Pakistan a thalassemia-free country will be continued.” He said thalassemia was a very painful problem for the innocent children and thalassemia patients deserved special attention of society. The purpose of marking World Thalassemia Day was to create awareness among the masses to prevent spread of the disease. Preventive measures were essential and there was need for effective awareness campaign.”
Biker killed, two injured in accident

OKARA: A motorcyclist died while two other suffered injuries in an accident on Pir Di Hatti Road on Sunday.Imran and his friends Khizar and Mumtaz were on their way by a motorcycle when a tractor-trolley hit their bike. As a result, Imran died on the spot while Khizar and Mumtaz were injured and shifted to a hospital.
Governor Sindh assures financial assistance to SMBBMU

SUKKUR: While addressing the students and faculty members of the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University Larkana (SMBBMU) on Sunday, Sindh Governor Muhammad Zubair said that the federal government and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) would provide financial assistance to SMBBMU for the completion of the ongoing academic as well as other projects. He said that the students and faculty members would be facilitated. The governor Sindh, on this occasion, invited the top 10 graduates of the university to the Governor House, Karachi, for lunch, where he would exchange ideas with them and vice-versa; and he would also give them awards and cash prizes.
JIT not acceptable to PPP: Khursheed

SUKKUR: While addressing the media, the Leader of the Opposition in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah here on Saturday said that the composition of a Joint Investigation Team was not acceptable to the Pakistan People’s Party. Shah questioned: “How would the JIT investigate PM Nawaz?” He added that it was impossible to investigate one’s own boss. In order for the investigation process to be fair, he suggested that the PM should first resign and then appear before the JIT. Khursheed Shah said, “Only this solution will be acceptable for all political stakeholders of Pakistan.”
Sherpao concerned at Pak-Afghan border tension

PESHAWAR: Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) provincial chairman and Senior Minister Sikandar Hayat Sherpao has expressed concern over tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He said the deterioration of ties was not in the interests of both countries and all issues should be resolved through diplomatic means.Sikandar Hayat Sherpao was addressing a public gathering at Sheikh Muhammadi village wherein nazim Hidayatullah along with general councillors and others announced joining the QWP. He said that the smaller federating units had been denied their financial resources.
