The water is being stolen from pipelines laid down by Capital Development Authority (CDA) at over 100 spots mainly falling in non-sectoral areas due to which the water supply to the residents has been affected even in the start of the summer season.

According to an official, there are reports that water is being stolen from pipelines in various areas including Pona Faqeera, National Park and Tarlai and Mayor of Islamabad Sheikh Anser Aziz has taken strict notice of the situation and directed the concerned authorities to immediately stop this illegal practice.

The official said the people living in new housing schemes or settlements where water supply system never exists are generally involved in water theft and this illegal trend is increasing day by day.

He said there are also reports of leakages in the water pipelines that is also causing wastage of water in different areas, adding "Unfortunately, the rate of water consumption per housing unit is quite high in Islamabad as compared to that in other international cities of the world."

Deputy Mayor Syed Zeeshan Ali Naqvi said they are focusing on the issue of the water supply and all the factors that are creating problems would be resolved once for all with an aim to make an end to the water shortage in the city.

He said Mayor Sheikh Anser Aziz has already approved the proposal to replace the outdated water pipelines and work on this project has already been initiated in various areas.
