ECP clears Nawaz, awaits Imran’s response

Scrutiny of lawmakers’ annual statements of assets and liabilities begins

ISLAMABAD: The ECP has started scrutiny of lawmakers’ annual statements of assets and liabilities and so far out of 124 MNAs, those cleared include Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif whereas Imran Khan has not yet responded to the ECP’s notice.

Sources said that the ECP initially had some questions about Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's assets but the latter’s clarification satisfied the commission and thus he stands cleared.

For the first time, the ECP has started the audit of lawmakers’ statements of assets and liabilities for the year 2016. So far, the commission’s Political Finance Directorate had processed the case of MNAs from NA-1 to NA-125. 

Out of these MNAs, 46 were cleared in the initial stage and no need was felt to seek any clarification from them. In 77 cases, which include Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan, the commission issued notices. The prime minister responded and got cleared whereas Imran Khan’s reply to the notice is still awaited.

Those 46 MNAs whose asset statements were found satisfactory include Mujahid Ali, Dr M Azhar Khan Jadoon, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, Engineer Dawar Khan Kundi, Ifikharuddin, Muhammad Zain Elahi, Nawabzada Rajab Matloob, Pir Muhammad Amin, Mohsin Shah Nawaz, Chaudhry Hamid Hameed, Dr Zulfikar Ali Bhatti, Malik Shakir Bashir Awan, Chaudhry M Afzal Khan, Lt Col ® Ghulam Rasool Sahi, Muhammad Talal Chaudhry, Muhammad Asim Nazir, Rajab Ali Khan Baloch, Chaudhry Muhammad Shahbaz Babar, Dr Nisar Ahmad Jatt, Rana Muhammad Afzal Khan, Haji Muhammad Akram Ansari, Qaiser Ahmad Shaikh, Ghulam Muhammad Lali, Ghulam Bibi Bharwana, Sheikh Muhammad Akram, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, Ch Asad Ur Rehman, Usman Ibrahim, Rana Umer Nazir Khan, Azhar Qayyum Nahra, Nawabzada Mazher Ali, Ch Abid Raza, Mumtaz Ahmad Tarar, Nasir Iqbal Bosal, Ch Armaghan Subhani, Rana Shamim Ahmed Khan, Syed Iftikhar Ul Hassan, Zahid Hamid, Daniyal Aziz, Ahsan Iqbal, Muhammad Riaz Malik, Mehar Ishtiaq Ahmad, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Shaikh Rohale Asghar and Khawaja Saad Rafiq.

Those MNAs who were issued notices for questions about their statements but were later cleared after finding their reply satisfactory include Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, Mian Shahid Hussain Khan Bhatti, Abid Sher Ali, Mian Abdul Manan, Abdul Majeed Khan, Sardar Muhammad Shafqat Hayat Khan, Chaudhry Khadam Hussain, Malik Ihtebar Khan, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Malik Ibrar Ahmed, Ghulam Sarwar Khan, Khial Zaman Orakzai, Shehryar Afridi, Usman Khan Tarrakai, Ali Muhammad Khan, Amir Haider Khan, Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, Maulana Muhammad Gohar Shah, Siraj Muhammad Khan, Imran Khattak, Sajid Nawaz Khan and Al-Haj Ghulam Ahmad Bilour. 

In the case of Ch Nisar Ali Khan, a reply has been received but the commission has yet to decide his case. In the case of Capt Safdar, he has sought 15 days time to respond to the ECP notice. MNAs Asad Umar, Raja Muhammad Javed Ikhlas, Mian Muhammad Farooq, Chaudhry Muhammad Bashir Virk, Justice (retd) Iftikhar Ahmed Cheema and Qaisar Jamal gave response to the ECP notices but they have been approached again for further clarifications.

Those MNAs who were issued notices to seek certain explanations in relation to their wealth statements but they have not yet responded include Eng Hamid Ul Haq Khalil, Gulzar Khan, Aqibullah, Nasir Khan Khattak, Murtaza Javed Abbasi, Babar Nawaz Khan, Sardar Muhammad Yousaf, Qari Muhammad Yousaf, Sar Zaim Khan, Akram Khan Durrani, Col ® Amirullah Marwat, Sher Akbar Khan, Murad Saeed, Salim Rehman, Ibadullah, Sahibzada Tariq Ullah, Sahibzada Muhammad Yaqub, Junaid Akbar, Bilal Rehman, Sajid Hussain Turi, Syed Ghazi Ghulab Jamali, Muhammad Nazir Khan, Ghalib Khan, Muhammad Jamaluddin, Bismillah Khan, Shahab Ud Din Khan, Al Haj Shah Jee Gul Afridi, Nasir Khan, Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Imran Khan,  Sheikh Aftab Ahmed, Maj ® Tahir Iqbal, Sardar Mumtaz Khan, Sardar Mumtaz Khan, Obaid Ullah Khan Shadi Khel, Sahibzada Muhammad Nazeer, Najaf Abbas Sial, Engr Khurram Dastagir Khan, Mian Tariq Mehmood, Saira Afzal Tarar, Mian Muhammad Rasheed, Muhammad Hamza Shehbaz, and Muhammad Pervez Malik.
