Peshawar’s Taimur Khan crowned Sindh Amateur champion
KARACHI: As expected, Taimur Khan swaggered to the 17th Sindh Amateur Golf Championship trophy as he won the coveted crown by a whopping five strokes here at the picturesque Karachi Golf Club (KGC) on Sunday.
The Peshawar golfer just cruised to the title without much fuss winning it with an impressive aggregate of 211 (-5).
After firing a stunning round of seven-under par 65 on the opening day, Taimur knew that the championship was his to lose. His first round heroics gave Taimur a big five shot advantage and he made sure that there were no hiccups on his part during the last two rounds. While the other title contenders tried and failed in their bid to catch up with him, Taimur played steady golf on the last two days to eventually win the prestigious title by five strokes.
He carded 73 in the second round and another 73 on the final day to keep his challengers at bay. Only M Rehman Mani threatened to catch up with him after playing a superb round of 68 that included a hole-in-one on Saturday but that effort turned out to be a case of too little too late. Rehman could only manage a score two-over par 74 on Sunday to finish third in the championship hosted by Sindh Golf Association (SGA).
Defending champion Zohaib Asif played a par round of 72 on the final day to finish as the runner-up. Other top finishers were Multan’s Ashiq Hussain and Arabian Sea Country Club’s Sajid Khan.
M Naveed won the amateurs (net) title with an aggregate of 221. He was followed by M Sharif (213) and Imran Khawaja (215).
President SGA Asad I.A Khan claimed the seniors’ title with scores of 73 and 78. He won by three strokes beating his cousin Omar Khan Bangash who scored 78. Sajid Sharif who carded 78 was second runner-up. In net category Ahmed Jameel Siddiqui (-5) won the title. The runner-up net was Arshad Altaf and second runner-up was Col Mansoor Akram.
Aslam R. Khan, the former SGA President was the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony of the three-day championship at KGC. Also present at the occasion were Asad I.A Khan, former Pakistan Davis Cup captain Khawaja Saeed Hai, former KGC captain the 91-year-old I.R Siddiqui, KGC’s COO Commodore Ghazanfar Abbas and KGC secretary Commander Majid Satti.
