Operation in Punjab

By our correspondents
February 27, 2017

This refers to the editorial, ‘Operation Raddul Fasaad’ (Feb 24). Along with the parameters of Operation Raddul Fassad mentioned in the editorial, the entry points to Punjab need vigilant watch.

These include Bhakkar, Isakhel and Kalabagh in the north western Punjab. No less sensitive in this regard is Jhang, the native land of the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and the Sipah–e-Sehaba. The merciless combing of this district will go a long way towards making the operation successful.

This refers to the news report, ‘Rangers to help Punjab govt in anti-terror operations’ (Feb 19). Special powers have been given to the Rangers for 60 days and that too only in 21 districts of the province including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Multan, Bahawalpur, Dera Ghazi Khan and Attock. The country’s biggest province, Punjab, has 36 districts and quite surprisingly the Rangers have been deployed only in 21 districts.

This means that during the search and combing operation in 21 districts, the terrorists, their facilitators as well as hardened criminals can easily escape and flee to the other 15 districts which are not covered in the operation. Needless to say that such elements are not just restricted to 21 districts but all over 36 districts of Punjab. Since the much-needed Rangers operation has been started, why can it not cover the entire province?
