The disabled are our responsibility and we are morally bound to take good care of them and provide better living conditions for them.

This was stated by Pakistan Sweet Homes Chairman Zamurrad Khan who was speaking at a seminar for the disabled held at PIr Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agricultural University Rawalpindi under the auspices of Awaz District Forum as a part of observing ‘International Day of Persons with Disabilities’. He said that his organisation was providing wheel chairs for the disabled in collaboration with China, says a press release.

Dr Shahid Nawaz of Sweet Homes said that they had plans to construct a home for the mentally retarded persons. Noted social worker Tahira Abdullah was critical of the government for not doing enough for the disabled who are living a miserable life. Naheed Aziz, who was inspired by Tahira Abdullah said that she was herself blind but that did not keep her from setting up a boarding and lodging house for the disabled without government help.

Lubna Arshad of Awaz District Forum said that it is strange that there are more teachers than students in schools set up for special children. She urged the government and private sector both to come out to give the disabled a new hope for life.

She said that there is need for their care in hospitals and they should not be driven to private doctors whose treatment they cannot afford. At the conclusion of the ceremony shields were given away to participants and a special shield was awarded to Lubna Arshad for her laudable services in the sector.
