Supreme Court issues notice to Google India, Yahoo, Microsoft, Facebook on rising cybercrimes
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India, on Monday, issued notice to tech giants Google India, Yahoo, Microsoft, Facebook on their role in curbing rising cybercrimes in India.
The top court, in November, had sought response from the Centre on what actions it had taken in probing cybercrimes and in curbing offensive content before it turn viral..
A Hyderabad-based NGO, Prajwala had file a plea in the Supreme Court on the growing cyber crimes in the country and had pointed out to nine rape videos circulated through WhatsApp.
The NGO had also sought framing of standard operating procedure (SOP) by the government for probing cybercrimes, and had suggested that online service providers should also be consulted while framing SOPs.
Cyber crimes in India registered under the IT Act rose around 300 percent between 2011 and 2014. The Centre had set up National Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (NCCC) to exclusively handle cyber crimes and national security issues in co-ordination with other agencies.
