Action against unhygienic food in full swing

A grand operation against adulterated and unhygienic food items in bazaars, markets, restaurants and food courts is now in full swing, one day after the establishment of regional office of Punjab Food Authority (PFA) in the Rawalpindi district.

PFA Safety Officer Adnan Mukhtar said the teams have started paying visits to marriage halls, hotels, sweet shops, food chains, bakeries, milk shops and industrial units to check the quality of food items during the operation launched on the directives of the provincial government.

"Our mission is to secure food safety and quality in the entire food chain in collaboration with manufacturers, food business operators, consumers and stakeholders keeping in view scientific principles and international best practices," he said.

He said PFA Rawalpindi office faces an uphill task to ensure food quality and safety that is why it is also planning to launch compulsory registration of food products in the district.

He said PFA in the start faced criticism when it began inspecting multinational brands and prominent food outlets after which it recruited food safety officers to further improve its expertise.
