Teams of the Sui Southern Gas Company and police continued the crackdown against miscreants involved in theft of natural gas by raiding sites in Landhi, Korangi and Orangi on Monday, operations in which several illegal gas connections were unearthed and severed.

One of the day’s raids was at the Muhammadi Ice Factory located in Sector 1-C-E of Orangi Town. The factory was illegally using gas supply by tapping in the auxiliary distribution line through an illegal connection. A 185kv gas generator was being used for illegal power generation and the estimated volume in six to eight months comes to around 4mmcf, which amounts to Rs4 million. The previous dues claimed from the factory owner were approximately Rs8 million.

Another case of power generation through stolen gas was unearthed in Landhi where a surveillance and monitoring team conducted a raid based on a tip off.

The plant was illegally supplying power to different households and commercial customers and officials said the operators of the establishment made a hasty getaway when the raiding party arrived.  As per the SSGC, natural gas theft is one of the main causes of unaccounted-for-gas (UFG) or line losses.
