It is commendable that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has launched 356 micro hydropower projects to combat energy crisis. Similar actions should be taken by the rest of three provinces as the quickest mode to overcome energy crisis. Mega projects like Bhasha and Dasu cannot be completed any time before the next five to six years. This is the only solution to switch over to micro dams generating electricity for 40-50 houses without involving it into national grid. Another alternative is to generate electricity on Run of River (ROR) Dams by utilising tributaries of rivers.
Even small hydro-electric turbines can be installed at the major canals of the country to generate electricity. Collective efforts by KP, Balochistan, Sindh and Punjab can overcome the energy crisis. Experts are requested to come forward for this national cause so that all domestic, industrial and agricultural needs can be met.
