AIOU distributes admission forms in Adiala Jail

Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has distributed free prospectus and admission forms at Adiala Central Jail in Rawalpindi to encourage the prisoners to get education so that they could live a respectable life after completing their imprisonment.

Senior officials of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) visited the central jail handed over a set of prospectus and admission forms for free distributions among the prisoners.

The jail inmates could apply for admission in their desired programme by October 10, keeping in view the relevant rules and regulations.

The prospects and admission forms were also provided to other jails in the country free of cost.

As a part of the awareness campaign, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shahid Siddiqui has himself visited jails in Karachi, Lahore, Quetta and Rawalpindi in order to bridge the gap between inmates and the university. He also wrote letters to Inspectors General, Prisons of the four provinces seeking their support to implement the educational plan for prisoners.

According to the university’s officials, the VC has recently enhanced the facilities for the prisoners under jails’ reforms’ plan on the directions of the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Accordingly they also remain in contact with Federal Ombudsman to achieve the desired goals.

A viable procedure has been worked out to provide them free education from Matric to BA, following an easy admission process.

AIOU has a singular distinction of facilitating prisoners. AIOU services include free text books and other required material and academic support, besides tutorial workshop.

It offers dedicated services for the betterment of the prisoners, who may avail facility for reduction of the jail imprisonment as well.

Currently, there are around 1,000 prisoners in various jails who are enrolled with the AIOU in different programs. “We wish to raise this number through better services, “the officials added.

The proposed plan includes a detailed procedure of tutorial meetings, workshops and examination to be held in jails.

It was also decided that a ‘Prisoner Study Centre’ will be established at every jail. In order to make the scheme more effective, practical and problem-free, it was also decided that Jail Superintendent will act as coordinator and he will be paid a reasonable remuneration for this purpose on semester-wise basis. Teacher to be nominated in jails will act as assistant to coordinator and he will also be paid remuneration.

He will also perform duty of centre superintendent during the examination, to be conducted within jail’s premises.
