LAHORE

The first three-day international endoscopic ultrasound workshop, organised by Lahore General Hospital has commenced at a local hotel on Thursday.

Post Graduate Medical Institute and Ameer-ud-Din Medical College Principal Prof Ghias-ud-Din Tayyab presided over the inaugural session of the workshop, which is scheduled to continue for three days.

Dr Muhammad Khalid Hassan from Florida Hospital, Orlando, Dr Ali Ahmed Siddiqui from University of Pennsylvania, USA, Dr Athar Ahmed Saeed with other local medical experts delivered comprehensive lectures focusing on diagnose and treatment of medical complications relating to liver and stomach.

Answering the questions of junior doctors during workshop, the foreign experts said endoscopic ultrasound was a modern therapy, wherein a detailed image of organs inside the human body like liver, digestive system, lungs was conceived. This image is very helpful to diagnose and treatment.

In his presidential address, Prof Ghias-un-Nabi said endoscopic ultrasound method was even more useful to identify and cure cancer of stomach and liver. He lamented the fact that only five centres for endoscopic ultrasound treatment were available in country, which was a very few as per the ratio of population. He said keeping in view the future challenges, Lahore General Hospital had organised this workshop so as to provide guidance to junior doctors into this therapy.

He said there was less number of doctors who knew this medical technique and on the other hand, number of such patients was increasing rapidly. He told the basic cause of liver and stomach related diseases was excess use of junk food.
