Merit culture promoted in every sector of Punjab: CM

Says talented students are future of Pakistan

LAHORE

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said the Punjab government has promoted merit culture in every sector of life and less-privileged students are obtaining positions due to its merit policy. Because of this merit policy, children of labourers and workers are taking lead over those of the elite by displaying outstanding performance in education field, he added.

He said these talented boys and girls of the nation are bright future of Pakistan and merit policy of the Punjab government has provided them an opportunity to move ahead. He said the Punjab government was providing all-out resources to enlighten the future of the children of resource-less segments of the society which is a useful investment on the bright future of the country.

He said this step of the Punjab government was playing an important role in moving the country forward and polishing the talent of the youth.

Talking to a delegation of youths, here Sunday, the chief minister said only merit had been made the basis in examination system, Punjab Educational Endowment Fund, Self-Employment Scheme, Chief Minister’s Chinese Language Scholarship Programme, Shahbaz Sharif Merit Scholarship Programme and other programmes, due to which, talented students of under-privileged families were benefitting and were leaving behind the children of the elite by taking positions in the examinations. He said these talented students had achieved this status through their hard work, merit and transparent policy in the examination without favouritism, collusion, bribe and rigging. He said merit policy of the Punjab government had provided the way to these students to move forward. He said that if merit, honesty and hard work was upheld in every sector of life then no one could stop Pakistan from progressing. He said that doors of higher education for talented but resource-less students had been opened through Punjab Educational Endowment Fund. He said that volume of this fund had reached Rs17 billion, out of which, scholarships were being given to 1.5 lakh less-priviledged brilliant students while scholarships would be provided to 50,000 more students. He said it was only due to merit policy that a daughter of the nation living in a tent achieved a prominent position in the examination by obtaining excellent marks due to hard work. He said the children of labourers and workers studying in difficult situation were also getting top positions in the examination and were the real face of the enlightened Pakistan and the entire nation was proud of them. He said that achievements were obtained only through hard work and determination and every difficulty could be overcome through hard work. He said one should march for promoting education and merit as well as empowering the youth. He said march aimed at stopping the way of progress and prosperity of the country tantamount cruelty to the common man and conscious people of Pakistan will never support such march.  

WAPDA CHAIRMAN: Chairman Wapda Lt-Gen (R) Muzammil Hussain called on Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, here Sunday. Pace of progress on hydel energy projects came under discussion during the meeting. Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister said the Pakistan Muslim League-N government was making strenuous efforts for overcoming energy crisis. He said that besides traditional sources, energy generating projects through alternative sources were being completed speedily for eliminating energy crisis. He said thousands of megawatt electricity would be added to national grid with the completion of different energy projects by the end of 2017. Shahbaz Sharif said the present government was determined to eliminate energy crisis, provide cheaper and abundant electricity to the masses and overcoming loadshedding. Chairman Wapda informed the chief minister about the progress on hydel projects.

PROBE: Shahbaz Sharif has ordered investigation into the incident of death of five children due to diphtheria during last few days in nearby villages of Kasur. He said that emergent steps should be taken for overcoming the disease and vaccination of children completed at the earliest. He said that teams of Health Department should perform duty actively and spare no effort in controlling the disease.
