This refers to the article, ‘How to save Rehan’ (Aug 29) by Adnan Aamir. The writer has done a great job of highlighting the case of a 21-year-old student – Rehan – who is from Balochistan and suffers from blood cancer. Though, the civil society is vigorously trying to collect money from the general public, they still have a long way to go. Rehan can’t be provided medical treatment in Balochistan itself as there’s no cancer hospital in the province. After going through the article, three suggestions came to my mind.
First, Pakistani philanthropists within the country and abroad should be contacted for donation to the cause. Second, only Imran Khan should be requested to undertake the construction of a third cancer hospital. This hospital should be constructed in Quetta. And third, the Pakistani public should be requested to donate an insignificant amount, say Rs10 each, for this noble cause. If only half of the country’s population (100 out of 200 million) donates Rs10 each, Rs1 billion would immediately be available. By repeating this exercise six times, over a period of six months, the entire amount for the construction of the hospital could be collected, keeping the target of Rs6 billion in view due to price escalation. The procedure for making donations should be made extremely simple, otherwise the whole exercise would go for a six. It would be better if donations are made through a very simple procedure via mobile phones which should be routed to the account number of the proposed hospital.
