This refers to the letter, ‘Governance?’ (August 22) by Dr Anwar Kabir Shiekh. The writer has hit the nail on the head by pointing out the countless defects in governance. The Supreme Court had to take a suo motu notice to ensure adequate supply of life-saving drugs and medicines in Islamabad’s hospitals.
Pity the nation whose highest court, which should be ensuring justice, equality and supremacy of law, has to take suo motu actions in trivial matters that relate to governance and provision of basic amenities to the citizens. Our rulers enjoy full VVIP facilities and perks but their governance cannot even take care of the basic requirements of the citizens and taxpayers. The writer is absolutely right when he says that at this rate “tomorrow the superior courts will have to monitor the watering of flower beds in the public parks or sale of railway tickets”. If the apex court has to spend their precious time in monitoring governance what is the executive branch of the government doing?
