This month’s programme arrange by the Floral Art Society (FAS) Rawalpindi-Islamabad Chapter was a competition titled ‘Nouveau Construction’ - an exhibit staged on a table 30 inches from the floor, while the space allowed to each contestant was 3x3 feet. Both experienced and novice members took part in the competition, which was basically to examine what they had learned from last month’s demonstration-workshop by Asma Ansari.

A few announcements were made including a reminder of next month’s fundraising event for the Pink Ribbon campaign and what the programme would include, and the fact that Farhat Zaman has raised over a lakh of rupees from the sale of her hand painted cards for all occasions which she was going to donate for cancer patients!

After hectic activity and some advice from colleagues for the less experienced, the results were judged by FAS President Waqar Boolani and Asma Ansari. The following were declared winners – Farhana Azim and Hina Kamran tied for first position. The second position was also a tie between Ghazala Abdullah and Yasmin Salman. Third position was attained by Huma Ehsan while Sarwat Aslam got a Highly Commendable,’ followed by Nasreen Mazhar and Amber each with a ‘commendable.’

The arrangements were different and eye catching and while judges look at the technical details, those who view and admire them do so with some other aspect in mind and in this context the arrangement by Fahima Yusuf is worth mentioning.

Wife of the ambassador of Japan, Rieko Kurai presented the prizes to the winners, as well as tokens of encouragement to novices who had participated in the competition – a nice gesture on the part of Farhana Azim, who gave the suggestion. Happy birthday was sung for those whose birthday falls this month and they also received bouquets of flowers and one of Farhat Zaman’s hand painted cards.

Refreshments were served and while enjoying them along with some ‘gup shup,’ plans for next month’s election for a new committee were discussed for which forms were filled and nominations made.
