KARACHI: The Rangers will be given powers according to the law and the Constitution and not according to the wishes of anyone, said the nominated Sindh chief minister Syed Murad Ali Shah.

There would be no need of the Rangers once civil institutions become strong, he said. Regarding the inclusion of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement in the government, he said it had not been considered so far.

Syed Murad Ali Shah was speaking to media persons in the Sindh Assembly building after submitting his nomination papers as a candidate for the post of the Sindh chief minister. The outgoing Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Speaker Sindh Assembly were accompanying him.

Syed Murad Ali Shah said he would give his policy statement in the Sindh Assembly on Friday (today).

He said whatever Arbab Rahim had done was known to everyone, and added that he would seek guidance from Syed Qaim Ali Shah for moving ahead.

Responding to a question why he did not attempt to be elected unopposed, he said there is no mention of such matter in the Constitution.

Even if there is no other candidate, the chief minister has to seek vote of confidence, as it gives an air of contest, which is the real spirit of democracy. Contest is the tradition of democratic norms.

Replying to a question whether the Muttahida Qaumi Movement was being included in the government, Syed Murad Ali Shah said that the issue had not been considered as yet.

Restoration of law and order in Karachi is the need of every citizen and it would be our endeavour that good law and order situation prevails in Karachi.  The journalists also asked a number of questions from Syed Qaim Ali Shah on the occasion.
