Tributes paid to Meraj Muhammad Khan

MULTAN: The People’s Lawyers Forum and the Progressive Writers Association paid rich tributes to politician Meraj Muhammad Khan in their separate condolence references here on Monday.
The People’s Lawyers Forum leaders, in a condolence reference, said that Meraj Muhammad Khan led a movement for the rights of labourers and his commitment for the working class had made him a towering figure. Speaking on the occasion, PLF Punjab former senior vice-president Tariq Saeed Malik said that Meraj’s role and struggle for democracy was unparallel. He said that Meraj Muhammad Khan came to public prominence in 1960s while studying at the Karachi University. He became an active member of the National Students Federation and later became its president in 1963, he added.
The PLF leader said that Meraj Khalid was among those who founded the PPP and fully endorsed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto for the PPP chairmanship. Malik Tariq Saeed said that Meraj Khan played a vanguard role in the Movement for Restoration of Democracy and visited every nook and corner across the country against the Zia martial law.
Meanwhile, Progressive Writers Association president Irfan Haider Shamsi paid tributes to Meraj Muhammad Khan for his services for the working class in the country. He said that Meraj Khan was a key player in the movement that led to the formation of the PPP and the movement against Gen Ayub Khan in 1968. He said that Meraj Khan also played a key role in the movement against the university ordinance in 1963/64, according to which any student or teacher could be kicked out if his or her conduct was objectionable in the eyes of the government. PLF Multan division former coordinator Tariq Khan said that Meraj Muhammad Khan was completely against military involvement in politics. He said that Meraj Khan had been fully involved in struggle against dictators Ayub Khan and Gen Zia. NSF former activists Ashiq Ali, Sajjad Bokhari, Mirza Asad and others also spoke on the occasion.
