The perils of sitting
Long periods of sitting have become routine in today’s environment, particularly for students. Unaware of the silent harm this causes, many people spend 12 to 14 hours a day sitting on chairs. According to health experts, prolonged sitting weakens muscles, damages heart health, raises the risk of diabetes and can even cause depression. It may also result in joint or back pain and delayed blood flow. If you sit all day, even regular exercise may not be able to reverse the damage.
Worryingly, research indicates that sitting for the most of the day increases the risk of dying young. Our bodies are not designed to remain still for extended periods of time. Adding activity throughout the day is essential for maintaining good health. You can protect your body and mind by standing, stretching and walking for a few minutes each hour.
