Pakistan's surge in freelancing is often touted as a success story. However, the practice operates in a grey area with few laws, protections or accountability and, in many cases, has turned into a modern form of exploitation for many. Thousands of young Pakistanis rely on freelance platforms to make a living and put in long hours without legal protections, formal contracts or health coverage.
We urgently need policy reform. Standardised contract templates, legal assistance for freelancers, platform regulation, and digital skills training that prioritises empowerment and rights. Pakistan cannot build its digital economy on the backs of unsupported, vulnerable workers.
