Sindh police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon on Monday held a meeting with Shia scholars at the Central Police Office to discuss security arrangements for Muharram. The meeting was also attended by Shia scholars and police officers from Larkana and Sukkur divisions through videoconferencing.

The meeting expressed their gratitude to the Pakistan Army for crushing Indian pride during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, and prayed for the survival and security of the country. The Shia scholars expressed their complete satisfaction with police security measures in different districts and divisions, and assured police and other law enforcement agencies (LEAs) of their full cooperation during all security arrangements, including those for Muharram.

They said volunteers would stand side by side with police during Muharram gatherings and processions, adding that constant contact with police at district level would also be ensured. IG Memon said there has always been exemplary cooperation between Shias and police during Muharram, and it would continue. “However, I request all of you not to fall prey to any mischief, and let the law do its job. We have defeated terrorism, and will continue to do so.”

He said the Sindh police, other LEAs and the security agencies are working day and night to strengthen law and order, and make it stable and integrated. “However, we also need to be more cautious and alert in view of the global scenario.”

He asked immediately contacting police in case of any suspicious activity, and also keeping a close watch on those spreading division and sabotaging law and order. He said dignitaries belonging to all schools of thought, including scholars and Zakirs, should make Muharram peaceful and safe through their individual and collective roles.
