Shaheen leads Lahore Qalandars’ UK trophy tour ahead of trials
LAHORE: Lahore Qalandars have announced plans to hold overseas trials in the United Kingdom (UK) and collaborate with English county clubs through exchange programmes, aimed at nurturing young Pakistani talent and expanding franchise visibility beyond borders.
“This initiative will help young players gain international exposure and open doors not only to the Qalandars but potentially to other franchises as well,” said COO Sameen Rana at a special trophy celebration held at the Pakistan High Commission in London. “It’s time to broaden our horizons and integrate with overseas cricketing systems for the long-term benefit of Pakistan cricket.”
The announcement came during a historic UK trophy tour by the reigning Pakistan Super League (PSL) champions and led by captain Shaheen Shah Afridi, who brought their silverware across continents to include overseas players and diaspora fans in their celebrations. Hosted by Pakistan High Commissioner Dr Mohammad Faisal, the event honored England-based Qalandars stars Sam Billings and Tom Curran, who missed the PSL 10 final due to travel restrictions.
The event also served to strengthen ties with the Pakistani diaspora in the UK. “We wanted to include our passionate UK fanbase and thank the community for their continued support,” said Atif Rana. “This isn’t just about celebrating a win, it’s about building bridges through cricket.”
Shaheen Afridi, who led Lahore Qalandars to their third PSL title in four years, highlighted the franchise’s core values. “What sets Qalandars apart is our player development program and our deep bond with every team member,” he said. “Sam and Tom couldn’t be in Lahore for the final, so we brought the celebration to them.”
Billings and Curran, visibly touched by the gesture, praised the inclusive spirit of the team. “Sameen and Shaheen create a very special environment, it’s rare to find such care and chemistry,” said Billings. Curran added, “From the very start, it felt like home.”
