UHS Syndicate approves appointment of 25 faculty members
LAHORE:The 89th meeting of the Syndicate of the University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore was held on Monday under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Ahsan Waheed Rathore.
The meeting deliberated on and approved several academic, administrative, and teaching-related decisions. One of the key approvals granted by the Syndicate was the appointment of new teaching faculty members on the recommendations of the Selection Board. These appointments include one professor, six associate professors, 14 assistant professors, and four lecturers.
Dr Uzma Zargham was appointed as Professor of Physiology. The Associate Professors appointed include Dr Hammad Ahmad Butt (Pharmacology), Dr Huma Rao (Pharmacy), Dr Rabia Anjum (Oral Pathology), Dr Masooma Ahmad (Anatomy), Dr Uzma Jabeen (Family Medicine), and Dr Farah Rehman (Medical Education).
Among the Assistant Professors, appointments were approved for Dr Asma Salam and Dr Naila Masood Riaz in Physiology, Dr Hafiz Majid Rasheed, Dr Waqas Ahmad and Dr Sadia Rafiq in Pharmacy. Dr Maham Javed in Histopathology, Dr Sana Siddiqui, Dr Saira Khalid and Dr Anam Zahra in Medical Education. Dr Faheem Shehzad, Shabbir Hussain, Khursheed Javed and Ghulam Mustafa in Medical Laboratory Technology. Dr Gul Mahnoor Hashmi in Physical Therapy and Dr Hassan Zahid in Public Health.
Lecturer appointments include Dr Anam Saeed, Mona Akram Khan, Nayab Fatima and Sehrish Ashraf. The Syndicate also approved the affiliation of the newly-established Narowal Medical College with UHS, under which 100 MBBS seats will be offered for admission.
Another important decision was the approval to award honorary degrees in MD, MS, and MDS programmes to selected members of the clinical faculty. Only those faculty members who already hold Level 3 or 4 qualifications from the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) will be eligible. A merit-based selection will be made by a committee of experts. These honorary degrees will not be valid for promotion or future appointments. The objective is to enhance the popularity of these programmes and to bring expert clinical faculty into the fold of academia.
The Syndicate further approved reforms in the examination system for MD, MS, and MDS programmes. Under the new rules, candidates who fail consecutively in eight attempts will be deemed ineligible to continue in the programme. In addition, the pass marks criteria for examinations in these programmes has also been revised.
Approvals were also granted for launching a BS Nutrition degree programme at UHS, appointment of biomedical engineer and technicians, establishment of a dedicated section in the Registrar’s Office for statutory meetings, upgradation of the Degree Cell, and restructuring of the Examinations and Medical Education departments.
