Wildfire devastates olive trees in Upper South Waziristan
WANA: A massive wildfire has erupted in the mountainous region of Ghorlama in Sarwakai tehsil of Upper South Waziristan, causing widespread devastation to valuable olive trees and other wild vegetation.
Officials said the fire, which began late Saturday evening, continues to spread rapidly, creating concerns among the local residents. A spokesperson for Rescue 1122 said the blaze had intensified due to strong winds and dry conditions, engulfing large swathes of forestland. “The fire is spreading quickly, and there is a serious risk of further damage if it is not contained soon,” the spokesperson stated.
Officials said that they had responded swiftly and deployed a special team to the site. “Firefighters, equipped with necessary gear, are actively working to suppress the flames. The operation has been initiated, and all available resources are being utilized to bring the fire under control,” said an official.
The local residents have accused certain groups of deliberately setting fire to the forests as part of ongoing tribal rivalries. Eyewitnesses claimed that not only were the fires intentional, but valuable trees were also being forcefully cut down. “This is not just an accident. It’s an act of sabotage,” remarked a local elder who wished to remain anonymous. The locals also accused the authorities of turning a blind eye to the destruction of natural resources, which not only devastates the environment but also disrupts local livelihoods.
