Suspect arrested, released in a bogus cheque case
LAHORE:The Raiwind Investigation Police allegedly arrested and released within 24 hours a man accused of issuing a bogus cheque worth Rs1.6 million.
According to the FIR, M Taiyab, son of M Ali, allegedly issued a cheque to Khurram Munir, a resident of Ferozepur Road. The case stems from a business transaction between the two parties involving the purchase and sale of rice during May and October of 2024. Khurram Munir claimed to have made full payment in cash for the rice received.
To settle the remaining financial matters, the accused allegedly handed over a cheque worth Rs1.6 million to Khurram on January 6, 2025. However, when the complainant attempted to cash the cheque on February 18, it was dishonoured by the bank. When Khurram confronted Taiyab to demand repayment, he was allegedly threatened with dire consequences.
The case was transferred to Investigation police who arrested Taiyab on May 8, 2025, at 9:35 PM. The arrest was carried out by ASI Idrees and two of his subordinates. In support of his claims, Khurram presented a video recorded at the time of Taiyab’s arrest, showing ASI Idrees taking the accused to the police station. However, to Khurram Munir’s dismay, the accused was released the next day at 10:55PM. Khurram alleged that the ASI was pressuring him to reach a compromise with the accused. When this scribe contacted the ASI, he confirmed that he had arrested the accused, Taiyab, and presented him before the investigation in-charge. He stated that due to his transfer, the investigation in-charge directed him to present the accused before the SP Investigation. According to ASI Idrees, the SP Investigation instructed him to listen to both parties and ensure justice was served.
ASI claimed that since the arrest, he had repeatedly contacted the complainant, Khurram, asking him to visit the police station with documentary evidence, but Khurram failed to do so. He asserted that the cheque in question was not related to the rice business, but was given by Taiyab as a guarantee for visa purposes. As per the agreement, the cheque was to be encashed only if Taiyab failed to make a payment after receiving a visa for a foreign country.
He added that the visa presented to Taiyab turned out to be fake, and in response, Taiyab filed an application against Khurram at the FIA office in Thokar. ASI Idrees alleged that following this, Khurram misused the guarantee cheque by presenting it as part of a fictitious rice transaction.
