BZU seminar honours labourers, advocates for fair wages
MULTAN: Marking International Labor Day, a seminar hosted by Bahauddin Zakariya University’s (BZU) School of Economics on Friday, featured financial experts and academics who paid tribute to labourers’ contributions and stressed the importance of safeguarding fair wages, especially for women.
The seminar was presided over by BZU School of Economics Director Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ramzan Sheikh. Speaking on the occasion, he highlighted the historical importance of Labour Day and emphasized the role of skilled and unskilled labour in driving sustainable economic development. He urged students to study labour market dynamics critically and contribute to evidence-based policymaking.
The guest of honour, Prof. Dr Muhammad Zahir Faridi, stressed the need for social protection systems and labour-friendly economic reforms. He discussed the informal labour sector in Pakistan and its vulnerabilities, calling for inclusive labour legislation and better data collection to support effective policies.
The seminar featured engaging presentations by faculty members, including Associate Professor Dr Fatima Farooq, who discussed gender disparities in the labour force and emphasized the need for policies that ensure equal opportunities and workplace safety for women. Dr. Farrukh Bashir spoke about the impact of technological change on employment patterns.Dr Muhammad Ayub discussed the impact of labour migration and remittances on economic resilience in developing economies like Pakistan.
