PARACHINAR: The demolition of bunkers under the Kohat Peace Agreement was taking place in Kurram tribal district where a total of 988 small and large such structures have been dismantled so far.

However, despite progress on the ground, key roads in the region remained closed, and a protest sit-in was still being held in Parachinar.

According to the district administration, the demolition of bunkers established by rival groups was being carried out as part of the peace agreement aimed at restoring long-term peace in the region.

A breakdown of the figures showed that 635 bunkers had been demolished in Upper Kurram and 353 in Lower Kurram.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Amir Nawaz said the removal of these bunkers was essential for sustainable peace in the region. “We are committed to continuing this process across both Upper and Lower Kurram to ensure lasting stability,” he said.

However, the situation remained tense as road closures continued to disrupt daily life. For the past six months, major roads in the district have remained blocked, prompting residents to stage a protest outside the Parachinar Press Club.

Social activist Mussarrat Bangash, one of the protesters, expressed concerns over the ongoing road closures. “People are facing starvation, and patients are dying due to lack of access to medical care,” Bangash said, adding that the sit-in would continue until the roads were reopened and declared safe for travel.
