Gas discovery near Korangi Creek sparks investigation

KARACHI: A recent preliminary site investigation near Korangi Creek has led to the discovery of an underground gas pocket during the drilling of a test well for water exploration. The finding was disclosed by TPL Properties Ltd in a letter to the Pakistan Stock Exchange Limited on Thursday.

According to initial technical evaluations and expert opinions, the gas is believed to be shallow biogenic methane, a naturally occurring gas resulting from the decomposition of organic material. Since this area is not part of a known natural gas reservoir, the gas pocket is expected to dissipate naturally over time if allowed to burn.

This discovery is part of a series of extensive studies conducted over the past two years, including geotechnical studies, soil composition and contamination tests, Electrical Resistivity surveys, and a comprehensive Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA). All investigations were carried out with necessary approvals and in compliance with regulatory standards, the statement said.

Following the fire eruption incident on March 28, 2025, the company has taken measures to contain the situation and has kept stakeholders informed through press releases.
