BD army chief dismisses rumours about coup, state of emergency
On Tuesday, Bangladesh Army strongly refuted an India Today report, calling it false and baseless
DHAKA: Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman has dismissed speculation about a state of emergency in Bangladesh, urging patience and warning against misinformation.
He also praised army personnel for their dedication, professionalism, and resilience, emphasizing that rumours should not be a distraction. General Waker made these comments on Monday during the “Officer’s Address” at Dhaka Cantonment.
Senior army officials from across the country attended in person, while those stationed outside Dhaka joined virtually. The speech came after a night of intense speculation, with rumours spreading about the possible imposition of martial law or a state of emergency in light of the country’s recent political developments.
According to sources at the meeting, the army chief addressed several key issues, including law and order, the spread of misinformation, and provocative rhetoric. “The country and its people remain the army’s highest priority,” said General Waker. He also expressed his gratitude to the officers and soldiers, assuring them that their sacrifices would always be recognized. He urged them to remain patient and not fall for provocations, warning that impulsive actions could serve the interests of those trying to create unrest. “Do not react to provocation. We must stay focused on our duty to support the country’s stability.”
On Tuesday, the Bangladesh Army strongly refuted an India Today report, calling it false and baseless. The report, titled “Bangladesh Army Holds Emergency Meeting Amid Possibility of Coup Against Chief Adviser Mohammad Yunus,” lacks credible sources or verifiable evidence, and is a blatant attempt to spread baseless rumours. The claims of an “impending coup” are entirely untrue and deceptive.
