RAWALPINDI: The Punjab government is set to replace the union councils with district authorities under the Punjab Local Government Bill, 2025.
The deputy commissioner of a district will be the district authority chairman, while the chief executive officer (CEO) will be the district executive board secretary. The heads of health, education, social welfare, pollution control, sports, transport, civil defence, public health engineering, art and culture and tourism will be members of the district authority. The union council would be the local government unit.
The entire district would be divided into the local government units. A notification would be issued soon determining the constitution and number of the union councils. Each union council will comprise two general members, while there would be one reserved seat each for women, minorities, youth and kissans (farmers) or labour.
The members will elect the union council’s chairman and vice chairman. Similarly, each tehsil council will have a chairman and two vice chairmen.
Besides the reserved seats, all union councils’ chairmen will be members of the tehsil council. The city areas will have town corporations headed by a mayor and two deputy mayors.
