I was asked by a relative to take photos, print them as postcards, and then mail them to the UK. The General Post Office in Rawalpindi sold me Rs400 worth of stamps for one postcard, while the GPO in Islamabad told me I needed stamps worth Rs500. The franking machine at the GPO in Rawalpindi was under repair, and the franking machine at the International Post Office in Islamabad could only process up to Rs99. Why can’t Pakistan Post print higher-denomination stamps? At one time, people stood in line at post offices to buy stamps or renew their driver’s licences. Thank to the internet – and the management’s failure to keep up with the changing times – post offices now wear a deserted look.
