Pakistan-Europe direct shipping service launched to boost trade
KARACHI: The India North Europe Express (INX) maritime service, a direct shipping line connecting Pakistan to Europe, was launched on Wednesday, promising to enhance global trade and streamline the delivery of Pakistani goods to European markets.
The service, set to commence operations on February 5, will feature a weekly rotation from Karachi, linking ports in India, Sri Lanka and key European destinations, including London Gateway, Rotterdam, Hamburg and Antwerp. The 6,000 TEU container ships will complete the round trip in 11 weeks.
Vice Admiral Faisal Abbasi HI (M), SI (M), Commander Karachi, Pakistan Navy highlighted the strategic importance of this new maritime venture at the launch ceremony. “Pakistan’s maritime potential, bolstered by its strategic location at the crossroads of Central Asia, South West Asia and the Persian Gulf, offers significant opportunities for trade and economic growth,” he said.
Abbasi added that the sea lines of communication (SLOCs) remain the backbone of global trade, with over 75 per cent of international commerce relying on maritime routes. He also pointed to the opportunities within Pakistan’s blue economy, particularly through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which he said would amplify the nation’s maritime capabilities significantly.
CEO of United Marine Agencies (UMA) Sohail Shams highlighted the transformative potential of the INX service. “This service provides a robust, direct maritime connection, reducing transit times and enhancing regional trade. Karachi’s strategic position as a trade hub will further support transshipment opportunities for global markets,” Shams said.
United Marine Agencies, representing HMM in Pakistan, plays a pivotal role in optimising logistics and strengthening the country’s maritime trade network. The new INX service reflects a shared commitment by global partners to drive progress and innovation in international shipping. Commercial Chief for Southwest Asia at HMM Yang Jungmo reiterated the importance of reliable and efficient shipping solutions, emphasising the INX service as a significant milestone in simplifying global trade operations.
