LAHORE: Fakhar Zaman, Pakistan’s accomplished opening batsman, finds himself at a crossroads in his international career, reportedly disheartened by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) handling of his recent exclusion from the national squad.
The 33-year-old, a key figure in Pakistan’s top order, was left out of the squad for the South Africa tour, a decision that has left him feeling undervalued. Despite the PCB citing concerns over form and fitness, Fakhar’s exclusion has been compounded by a lack of clear communication, sources close to the player revealed.
Earlier this year, Fakhar faced medical setbacks but is now reportedly in peak physical condition. Determined to make a comeback, the left-hander is set to prove his worth in the Champions Cup T20 tournament, aiming to remind selectors of his abilities.
PCB’s Selection Committee and Interim White-ball Head Coach Aqib Javed explained that Fakhar’s omission was strategic, prioritising his recovery and long-term fitness. However, the rise of younger talents such as Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique has added uncertainty about Fakhar’s role.
