As a second-year student at the University of Karachi, I have come to accept the challenges that come with attending a government university. However, one issue that universally frustrates students is the poor sanitation. With over 44,000 students on campus, the inadequate and poorly maintained washrooms are particularly unacceptable. The condition is so dire that even walking past them is unbearable. To address this, I propose a multi-faceted approach. Short-term measures include regular cleaning, increasing waste collection frequency, and providing temporary sanitation facilities.
Long-term solutions involve constructing additional washrooms, renovating existing ones, and implementing efficient waste management systems. Students can play a vital role by organising cleanliness drives, forming a sanitation committee, and collaborating with the administration. The university administration must allocate a sufficient budget for sanitation infrastructure and hire additional maintenance staff. I also urge the government to provide funding for infrastructure upgrades.
