31 model police stations set up across province, meeting told
Sindh police chief IGP Ghulam Nabi Memon on Monday chaired a review meeting regarding the establishment of model police stations in the province. The meeting was informed that 31 model police stations have been established across the province.
The meeting also discussed the overall law and order situation in the province, as well as the security measures to be taken in connection with Independence Day. Range and division police chiefs told the meeting about the establishment of model police stations in their respective jurisdictions.
IGP Memon said that a budget is being provided by the provincial government to construct and renovate model police stations. He said that policing would be modernised with the establishment of model police stations and bringing the necessary reforms.
He also said that the purpose of setting up model police stations is to provide people-friendly policing and a people-friendly environment. In the next phase, work will be started on the renovation of all the police stations of the province, he added.
He stressed that good-mannered and people-friendly staff, including women police, would be deployed at the model police stations, while a weekly briefing would be held on the construction of model police stations.
Security measures
The police chief later chaired a meeting about Independence Day security arrangements to review the measures being taken in terms of police response and prevention of aerial firing.
IGP Memon ordered ensuring extraordinary security in and around Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s mausoleum. He also ordered decorating all offices, vehicles and buildings under the Sindh police, including the CPO and the KPO, with green flags and lights.
He directed his subordinates to take strict action against those using pressure horns and other loud instruments. He also directed them to take action against the owners of motorbikes without silencers.
He said the police should be in a more alert position now, adding that officers must deploy police force as part of a regular strategy and set up security measures in consultation with all the stakeholders.
He also said that the intelligence network should be mobilised to prevent aerial firing, adding that motorbike patrolling must be made effective and integrated in the areas, ensuring timely response in any area where aerial firing occurs.
Comms upgrade
The police chief also chaired a meeting to review the upgrading of the wireless communications system of the Sindh police. The technical & transport DIG gave a detailed briefing on the importance, utility and objectives of the digital upgrade of the wireless communications system.
He said that modernising wireless communications would increase the coverage area of the communications system, achieve communication recording, geofencing, location and other facilities. The purpose of upgrading is to make communications safe and usable.
In the first phase, the S-4 project, the police helpline 15 and the proposal to upgrade the communications system of Karachi region are under consideration. Moreover, suggestions and measures are also being taken for installing locators in police vehicles.
The IGP said that a detailed report should be prepared based on the estimated cost and the necessary steps regarding the upgrading of the wireless communications system. The telecommunications system is a useful and effective tool of the Sindh police, and it is this network that keeps the Sindh police informed and active at every moment, he added.
He said the officials associated with the telecom police have an important role to play in policing, and it is imperative that the installation of trackers in police vehicles is dealt with at the earliest.
