Capacity payments of Rs8.344 trillion have been made to the IPPs during the last 10 years and it has been anticipated that capacity payments of Rs2.1 trillion will have to be paid during the current fiscal year. This will undoubtedly be paid by the ordinary citizens through exorbitant, sky-high electricity bills loaded with all kinds of taxes. The current and all preceding governments are responsible for this situation. We need to revisit the unjust IPP agreements on an urgent basis to provide relief to the people.
