UNHCR welcomes Pakistan’s decision to extend PoR cards for Afghan refugees
Islamabad:The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, has welcomed the Government of Pakistan’s decision to extend the Proof of Registration (PoR) cards for Afghan refugees by one year, until June 30, 2025.
“This announcement brings a wave of relief for Afghan refugees and shows Pakistan’s proud tradition of hospitality continues,” said Philippa Candler, UNHCR’s Representative in Pakistan.
Candler acknowledged and commended Pakistan for hosting Afghan refugees for many decades despite facing its own challenges. “The people of Pakistan have long shown solidarity and compassion towards those displaced and in need. I look forward to continuing to work with the Government and the international community to drive support to host communities while also searching for longer-term solutions for Afghans in Pakistan,” she added. The decision to extend the PoR cards reflects Pakistan's ongoing commitment to support Afghan refugees, providing them with legal protection and access to essential services. This move is expected to alleviate concerns among the Afghan refugee community, ensuring their continued stability and well-being in the country.
UNHCR has been working closely with the Government of Pakistan and other partners to address the needs of Afghan refugees and support host communities. The extension of the PoR cards is a significant step in these efforts, offering hope and stability to the many Afghan families who have sought refuge in Pakistan over the years.
