Zakat committee chairman shot dead
Karachi experienced another tragic incident of target killing within a span of 24 hours, following the assassination of an anti-terror officer in District Central. This time, the victim was identified as Qazi Abdul Qayyum, the chairman of the local Zakat and Ushr Committee.
The 50-year-old son of Qazi Khuda Bukhsh, was shot near Anda Morr in the jurisdiction of the Sir Syed police station. Unidentified assailants ambushed him, firing multiple shots before fleeing the scene.
Police and rescue teams took the deceased to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal procedures. Senior police officials also arrived at the location to investigate the incident. Initial assessments suggested that the killing was targeted and not a result of robbery, as nothing was taken from the victim. Qayyum was shot twice at close range, indicating a deliberate attack.
The police recovered an identification card from the victim's pocket, revealing his affiliation with the City District Government Finance Department and his role as chairman of the Local Zakat and Ushr Committee in Gulberg Town. Investigators were gathering evidence and attempting to retrieve CCTV footage from the area to aid in identifying the perpetrators.
This incident comes a day after the assassination of CTD DSP Ali Raza and a private security guard in Karimabad, within the jurisdiction of District Central's Azizabad police station, highlighting a concerning trend of targeted violence in the city. Investigations into both incidents are ongoing as law enforcement agencies work to apprehend those responsible for these killings.
