Mayor to present tax collection agreement with KE before City Council on June 10
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab will present the agreement for collecting municipal taxes through the K-Electric (KE) at the next Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) City Council meeting scheduled for June 10.
The mayor said the decision of the Sindh High Court (SHC) regarding the collection of municipal utility tax through KE bills was historic, as a result of which the KMC would receive over Rs4.4 billion during the next financial year.
“I hope all parliamentary parties will cooperate in the best interest of the city,” he said while addressing a press conference at the mayor's office on Friday. “I went to court ten times in the last month. I am thankful to the court for hearing this case and accepting that what was done is exactly according to the law, the mayor remarked.
He said the KMC had the right to decide how to collect such taxes. “We have also given an undertaking to the court. The court wants that the proposed collection of municipal utility tax should be re-validated by the City Council.”
The money collected through municipal utility taxes, he said, would be provided to every union committee. Wahab said the Sindh cabinet had approved a project worth over Rs12 billion rupees for providing water to Karachi from the Hub Canal. He added the construction work on the Malir Expressway would be completed by August next year.
