Sarfraz questions Haris’ inclusion in Pak touring squad
ISLAMABAD: Former Test fast bowler and pioneer of reverse swing Sarfraz Nawaz questioned the inclusion of Haris Rauf in the squad for Ireland and England tour, saying that he should have been asked to play in the President’s ODI Cup to prove his match fitness.
“I am surprised at the inclusion of some players including that of Haris Rauf for the tour to England and Ireland. He has been out of action since January and has no active cricket to his credit. He should have been asked to play President’s Cup One-day cricket to prove his match fitness before getting an opportunity to become part of the national team again. How a player and that too a fast bowler could be included in the team without proving his match fitness. That can only happen in Pakistan team’s selection.”
Sarfraz added that regaining match fitness in warm weather always helps a fast bowler. “Putting a bowler for gaining match practice straight in cold weather, like the team will find in Ireland would be a risky affair. It is also in the benefit of Haris to play in warm weather to regain complete match fitness ahead of the World Cup.”
Instead, Sarfraz said, Mohammad Ali who only on Thursday helped SNGPL bowl out Wapda for a low total in President’s Cup should have been preferred. “The worst thing about Pakistan cricket is that it doesn’t respect its own domestic cricket. Such a treatment only discourages top performers. Same happened to Usama Mir who was also dropped from the 18-member team announced on Thursday.
He is the top wicket-taker of the PSL 9, helping Multan Sultans reach the final, yet he was sidelined. If he misses the cut for the T20 World Cup, it will be a big loss to Pakistan. Abrar though has little international experience and exposure to stay confident against hard-hitting batsmen. Usama should be the first choice leg-spinner backed by Abrar. Leg spin is the most effective weapon in the T20 cricket. West Indies wickets are bound to provide assistance to leg spin. Usama’s inclusion is a must for the World Cup. I don’t think Shadab Khan is capable of creating any impression with the ball.”
“I think the time has come to think beyond personal friendship, likings and disliking. Hasan has no place in the team. In fact, even a domestic team would think twice before giving him an opportunity in the playing XI. His speed and overall utility is not worthy of a consideration in the playing XI.”
